Sodium thiosulfate (Na2S2O3), also spelled sodium thiosulphate, is an inorganic compound that is typically available as the pentahydrate, Na2S2O3·5H2O. The solid is an efflorescent (loses water readily) crystalline substance that dissolves well in water. It is also called sodium hyposulfite or “hypo”.

It is easily weathered in dry air above 33℃ and has deliquescence in the humid air. Sodium thiosulfate pentahydrate is the hydrate of sodium thiosulfate, the aqueous solution shows weak alkalinity. It is more stable in neutral and alkaline solutions and will decompose rapidly in acidic solutions.

What’s the application of HYPO?

Used for dechlorination of hydrogen chloride in natural gas, naphtha, syngas, hydrogen and nitrogen to protect downstream catalysts from toxicity. If the gas contains organochlorine, it should be converted to hydrogen chloride by a cobalt-molybdenum hydrogenation catalyst before the dechlorinator is used to absorb the hydrogen chloride.
