Description of triiodo-methan

triiodo-methan is the organoiodine compound with the formula CHI3. A pale yellow, crystalline, volatile substance, it has a penetrating and distinctive odor (in older chemistry texts, the smell is sometimes referred to as the smell of hospitals, where the compound is still commonly used) and, analogous to chloroform, sweetish taste. It is occasionally used as a disinfectant. It is also known as tri-iodomethane, carbon triiodide, and methyl triiodide.

What’s the application of triiodo-methan?

• It is used for sterilization and deodorization of infected wounds, with long-lasting effect and no irritation. Iodoform ointment, iodoform glycerin, iodoform paste can be used directly for septic inflammation, also used for root canal treatment and arsenical periodontal necrosis or arsenical periapical inflammation; iodoform strip yarn is used for dry socket, post-surgical maxillary sinus infection, dead cavity filling after pus drainage; iodoform sponge, iodoform calcium hydroxide paste is also used for pulpotomy, and used as antiseptic and disinfectant in medical bar and biochemistry. The oral LD50 in mice is 910mg/kg.
