Description of Chlorpheniramine maleate
Chlorphenamine (INN), also called chlorpheniramine (USAN and former BAN), commonly marketed in the form of chlorphenamine maleate, is a first-generation alkylamine antihistamine used in the prevention of the symptoms of allergic conditions such as rhinitis and urticaria. Its sedative effects are relatively weak compared to other first-generation antihistamines. Chlorphenamine is one of the most commonly used antihistamines in small-animal veterinary practice. Although not generally approved as an antidepressant or anti-anxiety medication, chlorphenamine appears to have these properties as well.
Chlorphenamine is part of a series of antihistamines including pheniramine (Naphcon) and its halogenated derivatives and others including fluorpheniramine, dexchlorpheniramine (Polaramine), brompheniramine (Dimetapp), dexbrompheniramine (Drixoral), deschlorpheniramine, triprolidine (Actifed), and iodopheniramine.
The halogenated alkylamine antihistamines all exhibit optical isomerism, and chlorphenamine in the indicated products is racemic chlorphenamine maleate, whereas dexchlorpheniramine is the dextrorotary stereoisomer.

What is Chlorpheniramine maleate?
- With the progress of science and technology and the development of society, chemical products have invariably permeated our daily lives, in medicine, food, cosmetics, electronics, industry, and other areas, becoming an essential part of our lives. One such product is Chlorpheniramine maleate which has developed particularly rapidly in recent years. Do you know about Chlorpheniramine maleate ?
- The official answer:Chlorpheniramine maleate preparations are available as tablets and injections, also known as paracetamol, an antihistamine, which plays an anti-allergic role through antagonism of H1 receptors. It is mainly used for rhinitis, skin mucous membrane allergy, and the relief of cold symptoms such as lacrimation, sneezing, and runny nose. It is used for cold and allergic diseases of skin mucous membrane. It functions as the main treatment for urticaria, eczema, dermatitis, drug rash, pruritus, neurodermatitis, insect bite, solar dermatitis, also for allergic dermatitis, vasodilatory rhinitis, drug, and food allergy, etc. In addition to Chemicalbook’s strong competitive blocking effect of histamine H1 receptors on the target cells of allergic reactions, it also has an anti-Choline receptor effect, so after taking the drug, symptoms such as dry mouth, constipation, thickening of sputum, and dryness of nasal mucosa can occur.
What’s the application of Chlorpheniramine maleate?
The antihistamine effect of this product exceeds that of diphenhydramine and promethazine, with a small dosage and light side effects. It is used for urticaria, vasodilatory rhinitis, colds, asthma, rhinitis, contact dermatitis, also for allergies caused by drugs and food, etc., insect bites, and motion sickness. UsesAntihistamines. Similar to clodrimidine, brompheniramine is also used as an antihistamine. The production method of brompheniramine is similar to that of clotrimazol, except that the starting material is replaced by a bromobenzene compound. It is used as an anti-allergic drug. It is rapidly and completely absorbed after oral administration and injection, with a protein binding rate of 72%. The onset of action is 15 to 60 minutes after oral administration, with peak blood concentrations in 3 to 6 hours, and 5 to 10 minutes after intramuscular injection. The half-life is 12-15 hours and can be maintained in the body for 3-6 hours. Most of the drug is metabolized by the liver in the body, and most of it is excreted by the kidney after 24 hours, and also excreted by stool and sweat. In nursing women, it can also be excreted partly through breast milk.
