Description of Camphor
Kampfer is a waxy, flammable, white, or transparent solid with a strong aroma. It is a terpenoid with the chemical formula C10H16O. It is found in the wood of the Kampfer laurel (Cinnamomum camphora), a large evergreen tree found in Asia (particularly in Sumatra, Indonesia, and Borneo), and also of the unrelated Kapur tree, a tall timber tree from the same region. It also occurs in some other related trees in the laurel family, notably Ocotea usambarensis. The oil in rosemary leaves (Rosmarinus officinalis), in the mint family, contains 10 to 20%, Kampfer, while camphorweed (Heterotheca) only contains some 5%. Camphor can also be synthetically produced from the oil of turpentine. It is used for its scent, as an ingredient in cooking (mainly in India), as an embalming fluid, for medicinal purposes, and in religious ceremonies. A major source of camphor in Asia is camphor basil (the parent of African blue basil).
The molecule has two possible enantiomers is shown in the structural diagrams. The structure on the left is the naturally occurring (R)-form, while its mirror image shown on the right is the (S)-form.
Norcamphor is a Kampfer derivative with the three methyl groups replaced by hydrogen.

What is Camphor?
With the progress of science and technology and the development of society, chemical products have invariably permeated our daily lives, in medicine, food, cosmetics, electronics, industry, and other areas, becoming an essential part of our lives. One such product is Camphor which has developed particularly rapidly in recent years. Do you know about Camphor?
The official answer: Kampfer is colorless to white translucent lump or powder, with Kampfer odor, and it is more widely used. In medicine, Kampfer is used as a nerve stimulant and local stimulant, and it can be used in cooling drugs such as ten drops of water and human elixir; it can also be used to prepare food flavors such as mint, white lemon, and nuts, and daily flavors such as flower lotion and daily cosmetics. In addition, Kampfer is used in large quantities in celluloid and photographic soft film, as a stabilizer for manufacturing smokeless gunpowder, and as a raw material for manufacturing sodium camphor sulfonate, etc.
What’s the application of Camphor?
It is an important pharmaceutical and chemical basic raw material and can be used as a plasticizer for the production of plastics, false ivory, varnish, explosives, insect repellent, antiseptic, etc.
It is also used in the production of celluloid, film, artificial ivory, fragrance, etc. It is also used in the production of rubber, electric insulation materials, aircraft parts, etc. It can also be used as an explosive stabilizer for smokeless gunpowder in the arms industry, an insecticide in the pesticide industry, a stimulant, cardiac stimulant, ten drops, coolant, anti-itch agent in the pharmaceutical industry, and an anti-moth drug and antiseptic for clothes and books.
It is widely used in medicine, the plastic industry, and daily life to prevent insects, moths, and odors.
Microanalysis and gas chromatography reference samples. The plasticizer of cellulose ester and ether, explosive, pyrotechnics, insecticide, manufacture of celluloid.
Used as pharmaceutical intermediates.
Used in the pharmaceutical industry and Rai’s method to determine molecular weight, also used as an insecticide.
