What’s the application of Mercaptoacetic acid?

• TGA is characterized by reactions with both hydroxy acids and sulfhydryl groups, the most important of which is the reaction with disulfides. In particular, it reacts with cysteine in a hair under alkaline conditions, cutting the (-S-S-) bond of cysteine to produce cysteine that can be easily curled. It is mainly used as a curing agent, depilatory agent, low or non-toxic stabilizer of polyvinyl chloride, initiator, accelerator and chain transfer agent of the polymerization reaction, and metal surface treatment agent. In addition, thioglycolic acid is a sensitive reagent for detecting iron, molybdenum, aluminum, tin, etc. It is also used as a crystalline nucleating agent in the processing and molding of polypropylene, as well as a modifier for paint and fiber, and a quick-conditioning agent for felts. It is also an important raw material for the synthesis of cysteine, hormonal agents, industrial disinfectants, and synthetic sulfuric acid. Besides being used as an intermediate of Cefivitril, mercaptoacetic acid is also widely used as a hair curling agent, hair removal agent, low or non-toxic stabilizer of PVC, metal surface treatment agent, and initiator, accelerator, and chain transfer agent of the polymerization reaction.
