Description of TMAO
- TMAO (TMAO) is the organic compound in the class of amine oxides with the formula (CH3)3NO. This colorless solid is usually encountered as the dihydrate. It is a product of the oxidation of trimethylamine and a common metabolite in animals. It is an osmolyte found in saltwater fish, sharks, rays, molluscs, and crustaceans. It is a protein stabilizer that may serve to counteract urea, the major osmolyte of sharks, skates and rays. It is also higher in deep-sea fishes and crustaceans, where it may counteract the protein-destabilizing effects of pressure. TMAO decomposes to trimethylamine (TMA), which is the main odorant that is characteristic of degrading seafood.

What is Trimethylamine N-oxide?
- With the progress of science and technology and the development of society, chemical products have invariably permeated our daily lives, in medicine, food, cosmetics, electronics, industry, and other areas, becoming an essential part of our lives. One such product is Trimethylamine N-oxide which has developed particularly rapidly in recent years. Do you know about Trimethylamine N-oxide?
- The official answer:Trimethylamine N-oxide is a chemical compound with a melting point of 220-222 °C (lit.) and a boiling point of 133.8 °C (rough estimate) and a density of 0.9301 (rough estimate) FEMA 4245 | TRIMETHYLAMINE OXIDE.
What’s the application of Trimethylamine N-oxide?
- TMAO is a gut microbe-dependent metabolite of dietary choline and other trimethylamine-containing nutrients. TMAO induces inflammation by activating the ROS/NLRP3 inflammasome. TMAO also accelerates fibroblast differentiation and induces cardiac fibrosis by activating the TGF-β/ smad2 signaling pathway to accelerate fibroblast differentiation and induce cardiac fibrosis.
