• Tin(IV) chloride, also known as tin tetrachloride or stannic chloride is a inorganic compound with the formula SnCl4. At room temperature it is a colourless liquid, which fumes on contact with air, giving a stinging odor. It is used as precursor to other tin compounds. It was first discovered by Andreas Libavius (1550–1616) and was known as spiritus fumans libavii.

Used as a catalyst for the cationic polymerization of isobutylene, alpha-methyl styrene, etc. Used as an analytical reagent and mordant, also used in organic synthesis as a spectrally pure and high purity reagent used in the manufacture of organotin compounds, as an analytical reagent, organic synthesis dehydrating agent. Also used in small quantities in the electroplating industry for the separation of potassium from rubidium and cesium. Used in organic analysis for saponification of phenols and ethers. Dehydrating agent for organic synthesis. Manufacture of organotin. Fabric dyeing.
