- Boric acid, also called hydrogen borate, boracic acid, orthoboric acid and acidum boricum, is a weak, monobasic Lewis acid of boron often used as an antiseptic, insecticide, flame retardant, neutron absorber, or precursor to other chemical compounds. It has the chemical formula H3BO3 (sometimes written B(OH)3), and exists in the form of colorless crystals or a white powder that dissolves in water. When occurring as a mineral, it is called sassolite.

Orthoboric acid also referred to as boric acid, has a lustrous appearance of white powdery crystals or scaly crystals with trigonal axial faces. It has a slightly bitter taste. It has a slippery sensation in contact with the skin. It is odorless and soluble in water, ethanol, glycerin, ether, and essential oil. The aqueous solution is weakly acidic. Orthoboric acid gradually dehydrates into metaboric acid when heated to 70-100℃, into pyroboric acid at 150℃-160℃ and into boric anhydride (B2O3) at 300℃. Boric acid is toxic to the human body. Solubility in water: 2.77 at 0°C, 3.65 at 10°C, 4.87 at 20°C, 5.74 at 25°C, 6.77 at 30°C, 8.90 at 40°C, 11.39 at 50°C, 14.89 at 60°C, 23.54 at 80°C, 38.00 at 100°C. The aqueous solution is weakly acidic, typical of Lewis acid, and in the presence of hydrochloric acid, citric acid, or tartaric acid, it can promote solubility in water. The presence of hydrochloric acid, citric acid, or tartaric acid, can promote solubility in water. Therefore, it can be purified by the recrystallization method.
