Description of 4-allyl-2-methoxy-pheno

Eugenol is a phenylpropene, an allyl chain-substituted guaiacol. Eugenol is a member of the phenylpropanoids class of chemical compounds. It is a colourless to pale yellow oily liquid extracted from certain essential oils especially from clove oil, nutmeg, cinnamon, basil and bay leaf. It is present in concentrations of 80–90% in clove bud oil and at 82–88% in clove leaf oil.

Boiling speed 253℃, melting point -9.2～-9.1℃, relative density d25251.053～1.064, refractive index nD201.538～1.542. slightly soluble in water, miscible with alcohol, ether, chloroform, volatile oil, soluble in glacial acetic acid, and caustic soda solution.  In the air, the color gradually darkens and thickens, iron, zinc, and other metal ions can catalyze its oxidation, so the storage temperature should not exceed 25 ℃, protected from light. Eugenol can also turn red litmus blue, and the role of ethanolic solution of ferric chloride is blue. In clove oil (containing 90%), clove basil oil (containing about 60%), violet flower oil (containing about 20%), cinnamon leaf oil, laurel oil, camphor oil, acacia oil, lemongrass oil are present.
