What is DL-Camphor?

• The official answer：Camphor, also known as 2-camphene, is a bicyclic terpene ketone compound with two asymmetric carbon atoms (1, 4 positions) in the molecular structure, theoretically, there should be four spin isomers, but only three are known, namely d-, l- and dl-. Camphor exists naturally in many essential oils, mainly in camphor oil, turpentine oil, basil oil, white herb artemisia, and other essential oils, most of them are d-body, l-body exists in silver gum chrysanthemum and white herb artemisia essential oils, dl-body is less common in nature, mostly synthetic products, only in Japanese original chrysanthemum essential oil. It has a strong clear aroma. Taste slightly bitter and cool. Colorless or white cubic crystal system flake crystal, or crystalline powder. Easily sublimated and volatilized with water vapor. Relative density 0.990(25℃,d-body), 0.9853(18℃,l-body) 0.992(dl-body). Melting point 179.8℃(d-body), 178.8℃(l-body), 175-177℃(dl-body). Specific rotation depends on the nature of the solvent and the concentration of the solution, d-body +44.1℃, l-body -43℃ (c=10, ethanol). Refractive index 1.5462 (d-body). Slightly soluble in water, soluble in ethanol, chloroform, benzene, acetone, carbon disulfide, acetic acid, insoluble in alkali, and glycerol. It can be distinguished from natural camphor or synthetic camphor by its refractive index, the former is mostly dextrose; mainly from the roots, trunk, branches, and leaves of camphor tree cut and distilled by water vapor, after condensation, white crystal is crude camphor, the oily liquid is crude camphor oil, crude camphor oil is refined into refined camphor by melting, fractionation and sublimation, the latter is racemic.

What’s the application of DL-Camphor?

• It is white crystalline powder or colorless semi-transparent hard lump, with irritating special odor, pungent at first, then cool, volatile at room temperature, soluble in ethanol, fatty oil, or volatile oil, very slightly soluble in water. Camphor has a weak antiseptic effect. When applied to the skin, it stimulates the cold sensory receptors of the skin and has a cool sensation, so the itching sensation can be suppressed and has an anti-itch effect. Rubbing with force will reflexly cause vasodilation and redness of the skin. Camphor also has some weak local anesthetic effects. This product can be formulated as the spirit of camphor, which is used internally as excitement and wind repellent, and externally as a skin stimulant for neuralgia, muscle pain or joint pain, etc. It can also be used as a local stimulant to treat frostbite (unbroken), etc. It is formulated with menthol etc. to compound camphor ointment, which has the functions of antipruritic, antiseptic, and improving local blood circulation, and is used for unbroken frostbite, neurodermatitis, etc. It can also be compounded with peanut oil to form 20% camphor application, which is a soothing stimulant and often used for neuralgia, muscle pain or joint pain, etc.

The subcutaneous injection can enhance respiration and circulation, and the excitatory effect is especially significant when the center is in the inhibited state. The principle is that it stimulates the receptors and reflexively excites the respiratory center and vasomotor center.4.
