• Pharmacodynamic properties20-dione17-alpha-acetate tablets are an anti-androgen preparation. It inhibits the action of androgens (the female organism can also produce trace amounts of androgens) and exhibits progestogenic and anti-gonadotropic effects. In men treated with 20-dione17-alpha-acetate tablets, sexual drive and performance are reduced and gonadal function is depressed. These changes can be reversed after treatment is stopped. 20-dione17-alpha-acetate competitively inhibits androgen action in androgen-dependent target organs; for example, it insulates the prostate from androgens produced in the gonads and/or adrenal cortex. In women, hirsutism is reduced, and androgen-dependent hair loss and enhanced sebaceous gland function are also diminished. Ovarian function was suppressed during treatment. A tendency for mildly elevated prolactin levels has been occasionally seen with higher doses of 20-dione17-alpha-acetate.
