Reaction with hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, oxalic acid, phosphoric acid, and nitric acid all produce salt. The generated chlorides are very soluble in water; sulfate and oxalate are slightly soluble in water; phosphate and nitrate cannot be precipitated as crystals. In the presence of nitrous acid, carbonyl hydrazide is converted to a highly explosive compound, carbonyl azide CO(N3)2, which decomposes when aqueous solutions are co-headed with acid.
