It is industrially produced by direct esterification of acrylic acid with butanol catalyzed by sulphuric acid. It is a monomer for the synthesis of acrylate resins and is mainly used in the preparation of coatings, adhesives, resins, and acrylic rubbers. Butyl acrylate is a soft monomer and can be copolymerized with various hard monomers such as methyl methacrylate, styrene, acrylonitrile, vinyl acetate, etc. and functional monomers such as hydroxyethyl (propyl) acrylate, hydroxyethyl (propyl) methacrylate, glycidyl ester, acrylamide, etc. to make acrylate resins with different properties.
