AmylmetacresolL Usage
- Pentylcresol can be used as a preservative, fungicide and mildew inhibitor. It is most widely known as the active ingredient in preparations used to treat fungal infections of the throat and/or oral cavity, for example in lozenges, such as Strepsils®, which are combined with other active ingredients such as 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol.
- The synthesis of pentan-cresol was first reported in 1930. The British patent describes the formation of amyl cresol by reduction of valeryl m-cresol with chlorine and then with zinc amalgam.
- The current method for large-scale manufacture of pentanyl phenol follows a similar general synthetic route and includes the formation of the intermediate valeroyl m-cresol (VMC), and then reduction of the VMC to form pentanyl cresol.
