Isobutyric acid was reacted with thionyl chloride to produce isobutyric chloride. The suitable reaction conditions were: isobutyric acid titration temperature 25-30 ℃, titration time 0.5 h; reaction temperature 80 ℃, reaction time 1.5 h; yield 92%-93%. In the presence of anhydrous aluminum trichloride, toluene was acylated with isobutyryl chloride to give 2-methyl-1-(4-methyl phenyl)acetone in 75% yield. The synthesized product was identified by infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to be structurally correct.
