Used as a chlorinating agent in the synthesis or replacement of organic substances such as alcohols hydroxyl, acid anhydrides, organosulphonic acids, and nitro compounds, also used as a chlorinating agent in the synthesis of thiazolidines, pyrrolidines, and amides in closed-loop reactions, and as a catalyst in the preparation of drug intermediates, organic anhydrides, dye intermediates, and another synthesis. It is also used as an analytical reagent for the determination of aromatic and aliphatic amines. [3] Can be produced by co-heating calcium sulfite with phosphorus pentachloride.

Used as a chlorinating agent in organic synthesis, e.g. chlorination of hydroxyl groups of alcohols, chlorination of carboxylic acids, chlorination of acid anhydrides, chlorine replacement of organosulphonic acids or nitro compounds. Manufacture of acyl chlorides. Manufacture of pharmaceutical intermediates, e.g. Roundup, odorless synthomycin. Also used as a dehydrating agent and solvent.

Can be used as a raw material in the manufacture of batteries.
