What is Oxaliplatin?
With the progress of science and technology and the development of society, chemical products have invariably permeated our daily lives, in medicine, food, cosmetics, electronics, industry, and other areas, becoming an essential part of our lives. One such product is Oxaliplatin which has developed particularly rapidly in recent years. Do you know about Oxaliplatin?
The official answer: Oxaliplatin is a 3rd generation platinum anticancer drug, which is a diaminocyclohexane platinum compound, i.e., the amino group of cisplatin is replaced by the 1,2-diaminocyclohexane group. It acts in the same way as other platinum drugs, i.e., it targets DNA as the site of action, and platinum atoms form cross-links with DNA to antagonize its replication and transcription. Synergistic effects with fluorouracil (5-FU); in vitro and in vivo studies show no cross-resistance with cisplatin.
What’s the application of Oxaliplatin?
For the treatment of colorectal cancer. Used as an antineoplastic agent for the treatment of rectal cancer.
Adverse reactions and side effects:
- Hematopoietic system: L-OHP has some hematological toxicity. When used alone, it can cause the following adverse reactions: anemia, leukopenia, granulocytopenia, thrombocytopenia, sometimes up to grade 3 or 4. When combined with 5-fluorouracil, hematological toxicity such as neutropenia and thrombocytopenia increases.
- Digestive system: When applied alone, it can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. These symptoms are sometimes severe. When applied in combination with 5-fluorouracil, these side effects are significantly increased. Prophylactic and/or therapeutic antiemetic medication is recommended.
- Nervous system: Peripheral sensory neuropathy characterized by peripheral neuritis. It may sometimes be accompanied by perioral, upper respiratory, and upper gastrointestinal tract spasms and sensory disturbances.
