What is N,N-Diethyl-m-toluamide ?

  • With the progress of science and technology and the development of society, chemical products have invariably permeated our daily lives, in medicine, food, cosmetics, electronics, industry, and other areas, becoming an essential part of our lives. One such product is N,N-Diethyl-m-toluamide   which has developed particularly rapidly in recent years. Do you know about N,N-Diethyl-m-toluamide?
  • The official answerDEET is a broad-spectrum insect repellent that can repel stinging flies, midges, black flies, chiggers, deer flies, fleas, gnats, horse flies, mosquitoes, sand flies, small flies, stable flies, and lice. Mosquito repellent was developed and patented by the U.S. Department of Agriculture during World War II, and was designated as a mosquito repellent product for the U.S. Army in 1946. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency statistics, nearly 40% of Americans use insect repellents containing mosquito repellent every year, and about 200 million people worldwide use it, more than 40 years, more than 20,000 research units have proved that mosquito repellent is the safest and most effective broad-spectrum repellent on the market. The World Health Organization also recommends the use of repellent products containing mosquito repellent to prevent the infestation of vector insects. It is often mixed with other insecticides, but its toxicity is enhanced when mixed with carbamate insecticides.

What’s the application of N,N-Diethyl-m-toluamide ?

  • It is the main repellent component of various solid and liquid mosquito repellent series. Formulation: 70%, 95% liquid. The mechanism of action of mosquito repellent (DEET) is still not very clear, the earliest thought is to rely on the play of deterrent odor so that blood-sucking insects smell the resistance and avoid close to the human body, to prevent the bite effect. However, it was found that DEET can inhibit the electrophysiological response of mosquitoes to lactic acid and 1-often-3-ol compounds and other major components of human sweat, masking or closing the olfactory system of mosquitoes and preventing the identification of suitable prey. Then later, it was found that DEET acts directly on specific olfactory neurons on the tentacles of mosquitoes to produce repellent effects and does not inhibit mosquitoes’ perception of chemicals such as lactic acid, CO2, and 1-often-3-ol. Recent studies have also found that the binding of DEET to certain molecular targets is the first biochemical step in the recognition of external substances, but these findings need to be verified by follow-up.
