Methyl Orange uses

As acid-base indicator, pH 3.1 (red) -4.4 (yellow), also used for biological staining.

Acid-base indicator, pH change range of 3.1 (red) ~ 4.4 (yellow), measure the alkalinity of most mineral acids, strong alkalis and water; capacity measurement tin (Sn2+ will fade methyl orange when heated); strong reducing agent ( Ti3+, Cr2+) and strong oxidants (chlorine, bromine) decolorization indicator; spectrophotometric determination of chlorine, bromine and bromide ions; can be mixed with indigo sodium disulfonate or bromocresol green to form a mixed indicator to shorten the color range and Improve the sharpness of discoloration; redox indicator, such as potassium bromate titration of trivalent arsenic or antimony

Acid-base indicator, decolorizing indicator of strong reducing agent and strong oxidizing agent, cytoplasmic indicator, histological contrast staining agent, pollen tube staining. The pH value ranges from 3.1 (red) to 4.4 (yellow). It measures the alkalinity of most mineral acids, strong alkalis and water. Volumetric determination of tin (Sn2+ when heated makes methyl orange fade). A decolorizing indicator for strong reducing agents (Ti3+), Cr2+) and strong oxidizing agents (chlorine, bromine). Spectrophotometric determination of chlorine, bromine and bromide ions. It can be combined with indigo sodium disulfonate or bromocresol green to form a mixed indicator to shorten the color range and improve the sharpness of the color. Redox indicator, such as potassium bromate to titrate trivalent arsenic or antimony.

Methyl Orange production method

It is obtained by the reaction of p-aminobenzene sulfonic acid with N, N-dimethylbenzene after diazotization. Dissolve p-sulfamic acid in 2.5% sodium carbonate solution, add sodium nitrite, and after it is completely dissolved, add crushed ice and hydrochloric acid for diazotization reaction, and precipitate diazonium salt crystals. Add a mixture of N,N-dimethylaniline and glacial acetic acid to the diazonium salt solution, stir for 10 minutes, and then slowly add 10% sodium hydroxide solution to alkaline. Cool to crystallize, filter, wash with saturated brine, dry, and recrystallize with water to obtain methyl orange.

Main uses of methyl orange

Methyl orange is a commonly used indicator for acid-base titration in analytical chemistry, and is not suitable for use as an indicator for titration of organic acids. The pH of the 0.1% aqueous solution is 3.1 (red) ~ 4.4 (yellow), which is suitable for titration between strong acid and strong base and weak base. It is also used for spectrophotometric determination of chlorine, bromine and bromide ions, and for biological dyeing.
